The Book Thief By: Markus Zusak

The Book Thief
By: Markus Zusak

"Although something inside her told her that this was a crime – after all, her three books were the most precious items she owned – "

The Book Thief is a very unique, and intriging book narrated by Death. Yes, Death. Death tells the account of a young girl named Liesel Meminger. Liesel lives in Germany at the time of World War 2. Liesel is on her way to Munich, where she and her younger brother will go to live with their new foster family. But Liesel's brother doesn't make it, and she goes alone, leaving her mother, wondering if she will ever she her again. When Liesel arrives at the Hubermanns, she is a scrawny 10 year old, with hardly any education. Over time she becomes comfortable in her new home, learns to read and even makes a few friends. Liesel loves to play soccer, to learn, to read, and most importantly, steal books. Liesel steals many books in her life time, and is given some as well. The Book Thief is a great book that shows the struggles and turn of events in a young girl's life who happens to live in a society that she doesn't always agree with.

Liesel is surrounded by a cast of lovable characters. Some of them are, Hans Hubermann, Rosa Hubermann, and Rudy Steiner. Hans Hubermann, or 'Papa'  is a very eccentric painter and accordionist. Hans is a man who loves to smoke, helps Liesel read, and helps her adapt. Hans Hubermann scraped through the war in his younger years. He had many stories from then, including learning to play the accordion, and a promise. Painting is his profession, but sometimes he plays the accordion for a bit of money. 'Mama', or Rosa Hubermann, is a harsh, demanding, fugal, woman. Rosa is also the mother of two other children that are grown and gone. She is famous for her watery, bland pea soup, washing service, and her swearing. Even though Rosa seems harsh, it is clear that she loves Liesel, and wants the best for her family. And lastly, Rudy Steiner. Rudy comes from a large family, that live right by the Hubermanns. Rudy is a free spirit, who loves to run, play soccer, and steal with Liesel. Rudy is always trying to get one thing from Liesel, and his famous line is, "How about a kiss?" But to his disappointment, his request is always denied. I liked all of the different characters and all created a very believable setting, and story.

I really enjoyed this book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. A book narrated by Death was something I had never heard of, and I really liked it, it gives a whole new side to the story. I think it has a great message, and helped me better understand the time period. I also liked it because it has lots of twists and keeps you wondering what will come next. Don't let the size scare you, it is totally worth it. Anyone that enjoys reading original, fresh, adventurous stories will love this book.

  3. Great job on your book review! I could totally see all the characters and the setting in my head. I liked that you included a short description of some of the main characters. This doesn't really sound like a book I would enjoy but I'm sure other people would! Good job!!!
