This is a story about Henry Fleming who enlists with the Union Army in the hopes of glory. After enlisting he experiences waiting. When he gets in his first battle the enemy starts to approach, Henry's fears he might die, and he runs. In full retreat he hears that the enemy is being held back, but he keeps on running. Then he hears the battle raging on behind him so he returns to battle.
Then he comes upon wounded men returning from battle to get medical assistance. One of these wounded soldiers befriends Henry and begins a conversation with him. When the tattered soldier asks Henry where he is wounded, Henry evades the question by leaving him and drifting into the crowd of soldiers. Henry asks a soldier what's going on and he hits him in the head with his rifle. He finds his division and says he was shot in the head.
This is a great book to read if you like the 1800's, Civil War, or military books. This book talks about the hardships of war and the mental damage it has on soldiers.

ReplyDeleteI proud of you for choosing to read this book because it's an American classic. If someone thinks war is adventure and glory, then he should read this to find out what it was really like (at least during the Civil War).
I've read this book before, and even though it was like five years ago, I still remember some parts of the book here and there.
